Top 10 Energy Companies For 2014

The debate over natural gas exportation has created some unfamiliar enemies and even more unfamiliar friends. While it's pretty obvious who the supporters are, some of the largest opponents are not who you would expect: manufacturers. Leading the charge is a group known as America's Energy Advantage, and they have a wide range of supporters including stalwarts ofmanufacturing. The largest and most vocal opponent beingDow Chemical (NYSE: DOW  ) .

Let's look at why Dow Chemical wants to keep natural gas on U.S. shores and what it's doing to keep it here:

Keep the gas, keep the profits
The one simple reason that Dow and its partners in America's Energy Advantage are advocating for not exporting LNG is to keep the gas here to power energy-intensive manufacturing. Industries like steel and chemicals demand large amounts of energy, and cheap gas in the U.S. gives these companies incentive to produce here.

Steel giant Nucor (NYSE: NUE  ) will be opening a direct-reduced iron (DRI) plant in Louisiana. This plant was built in large part because of favorable energy prices due to cheap natural gas and will be the only one of its kind in the U.S.Alcoa (NYSE: AA  ) is another proponent of keeping the energy source within our borders. The aluminum giant has joined up with America's Energy Advantage group to protect a cheap source of energy. In the case of Dow, though, there is so much more than energy behind this move.

Top 10 Energy Companies For 2014: SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (SDT)

SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (The Trust) is a statutory trust. The Trust was created to acquire and hold the Royalty Interests for the benefit of Trust unitholders. SandRidge conveyed to the Trust the Royalty Interests in specified oil and natural gas properties in the Mississippian formation in Alfalfa, Garfield, Grant, Major and Woods counties in Oklahoma (the Underlying Properties). These Royalty Interests were derived from SandRidge interests in a 36 wells and the equivalent of 123 horizontal development wells to be drilled in the Mississippian formation (Trust Development Wells) within an area of mutual interest (AMI), consisting of approximately 49,600 gross acres (42,000 net acres) in the counties where the Underlying Properties are located.

Effective January 1, 2011, the Royalty Interests entitle the Trust to receive 90% of the proceeds from the sale of oil and natural gas production attributable to its net revenue interest in the Initial Wells and 50% of the proceeds from the sale of oil and natural gas production attributable to SandRidge net revenue interest in the Trust Development Wells. As of December 31, 2011, the Trust properties consisted of Royalty Interests in the Initial Wells, 48 wells (equivalent to approximately 53 Trust Development Wells under the development agreement) and the equivalent of approximately 70 Trust Development Wells to be drilled in the Mississippian formation.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matt DiLallo]

SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (NYSE: SDT  ) and Trust II (NYSE: SDR  )
These trusts were created by SandRidge Energy (NYSE: SD  ) , with the first Mississippian Trust formed in 2010 and the second formed one year later. Both trusts own royalty interests in oil and gas properties targeting the Mississippian formation and have future upside as SandRidge drills wells as part of the areas of mutual interest.

  • [By Adam Galas]

As the chart illustrates, SandRidge's other royalty trust,SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (NYSE: SDT  ) , which has already had its final wells drilled, has been experiencing a severe decline in distributions, a result of its massive quarterly production declines of 26%, 21%, and 22% immediately after the last well was drilled.

  • [By Matt DiLallo]

The problem here is that SandRidge has beendependenton asset sales and its running out of assets to sell. In addition to the Permian sale, SandRidge has now taken three royalty trusts public. One consisting of Permian Basin assets, SandRidge Permian Trust (NYSE: PER  ) and two consisting of Mississippian assets, SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (NYSE: SDT  ) and SandRidge Mississippian Trust II (NYSE: SDR  ) . While SandRidge still owns a portion of each trust, it likely will continue to sell off its ownership stake in each trust as well as other assets it still owns. At some point SandRidge will need to live within its oil and gas cash flows, otherwise, its not worth owning.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

SandRidge has made a huge bet on the Mississippian Lime shale play, especially after selling off its Permian Basin assets late last year. Unfortunately, that bet hasn't paid off well for shareholders, as the company saw its spun-off royalty trusts SandRidge Mississippian Trust I (NYSE: SDT  ) and SandRidge Mississippian Trust II (NYSE: SDR  ) fail to meet their projections for distribution amounts during the first quarter. The main problem has been that wells in the Mississippian Lime have produced more natural gas than expected, and even with a slight rebound in gas prices, it still doesn't produce adequate margins compared to oil and natural-gas liquids.

Newfield Exploration (NFX) has plunged today after the oil and gas explorer revealed its production targets for 2014 and beyond.

    Associated Press

RTT News has the details on Newfield’s forecast:

Newfield Exploration Co. updated its “three-year plan” and provided additional information. Net production from continuing operations in 2014 is expected to range from 44 – 48 million BOE, or 10% – 20% higher than 2013 estimated net production from continuing operations of approximately 40 million BOE. Domestic liquids production in 2014 is expected to increase 30% over the previous year.

Jefferies’ Subash Chandra and Daniel Braziller offer their take on the announcement:

Company is tightening the previously announced production guidance range. New range is 44-48 mmboe and 48-55 mmboe in 2014 and 2015, respectively. Domestic liquids growth y/y in 2014 is expected at 30%, slightly below prior guidance for 38%. Lower liquids is likely the result of morecapital being deployed in the Cana and slower near-term growth in the Uinta due to refinery maintenance…

2013 production has so far come-in at the high-end of previous guidance, and a similar outcome is possible for 2014-2016. The stock is well positioned from here to outperform, as the market is likely assuming the midpoint of guidance will be achieved. Additionally, the 2013 reserve report is an upcoming catalyst – we believe NFX is an NAV story. On a $95 / $4 price deck, we estimate a 2013 P1 value of $23/shr.

Shares of Newfield have dropped 8% to $24.31 at 3:45 p.m., well below Exxon Mobil’s (XOM) 0.3% gain, Occidental Petroleum’s (OXY) 0.5% rise and Anadarko Petroleum’s (APC) 0.4% dip.

But as highlighted earlier Whitecap's Canadian light sweet crude is not as heavily discounted as Canadian heavy oil or bitumen. This does not leave it exposed to the same price risks and volatility as those companies that have a significant portion of their production made up by Canadian heavy oil and Bitumen, such as Husky Energy (HUSKF.PK), Suncor (SU), Imperial Oil (IMO) and Canadian Natural Resources (CNQ).
