Carl Icahn picked several fights last year, but his very public spat with eBay Inc (NASDAQ: EBAY) was probably the most memorable. The fight made history as it played out largely on Twitter Inc (NYSE: TWTR), which in turn prompted the SEC to step in with guidance for using social media in proxy fights. Icahn lobbied for the online auction site to spin off its PayPal division, but in the end dropped his case in exchange for his pick of a new board member. Alamy You can never know in advance all the news that will move the market in a given week, but some things you can see coming. From a new tablet from Amazon to Microsoft giving Windows an overdue makeover, here are some of the items that will help shape the week that lies ahead on Wall Street. Monday -- Bank on It: We're just getting started with earnings season, but Monday will be relatively quiet on that front. One of the few companies kicking off the week with fresh financials will be Wintrust (WTFC), a financial holding company with $18 billion in assets. It operates 15 different community bank subsidiaries with 100 different locations. It may not be the same kind of snapshot of the financial industry that we got this past Friday when bigger banks reported, but we can't ignore the importance of community banks in gauging the state of the economic turnaround. Tuesday -- Pop Stars: Coca-Cola (KO) reports on Tuesday, and if that isn't enough we will have PepsiCo (PEP) checking in on Wednesday. Coke and Pepsi have been battling one another for years, but in some ways, they're united against common adversaries these days. Between the growing popularity of making sodas at home, and critics taking them on over the health implications of consuming too many sugary (or artificially sweetened) drinks, it's a whole different kind of cola war these days. Investors looking for growth may want to look elsewhere. Analysts see Pepsi's revenue inching just 2 percent higher when it reports. It's worse for Coca-Cola, with Wall Street targeting a 2 percent decline in sales. Wednesday -- Paypal Day: eBay (EBAY) reports its third quarter results on Wednesday. There was a time when eBay was strictly an online flea market, but these days we're seeing PayPal become a bigger part of the model. Yes, eBay also owns PayPal, the most popular way to settle online transactions outside of plastic. PayPal has started to expand its reach into traditional retailers, making it possible

States get their tax revenue from a variety of different sources. Unlike the federal government, which relies almost solely on income taxes, most states add on property taxes and sales taxes to help finance statewide and local government expenses. The immense popularity of online marketplaces Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN  ) and eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY  ) show the length to which consumers will go to avoid having to pay sales taxes, as those companies have traditionally been able to avoid having to collect sales tax in most of the jurisdictions they serve. Moreover, the competitive advantage that they've gained has helped send brick-and-mortar retailers Best Buy (NYSE: BBY  ) and Sears Holdings (NASDAQ: SHLD  ) into serious difficulty, and countless small businesses suffer from the disadvantage of having to charge their customers sales taxes that those customers could avoid by going to Amazon, eBay, or other untaxed online retail sources.

Many consumers are willing to pay a premium for an iPad because of its premium design and app ecosystem; but Amazon, Samsung, and Google are nevertheless chipping away with improving iPad alternatives.

Where Samsung was once the fastest-growing Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) Android smartphone maker, most of Android's market share growthis now coming from the "other" segment, driven largely by cheap options coming out of China. The question now becomes whether this developing news is good now either Google or Samsung, and the answer is somewhat unexpected. For Google, growth in the low end of the smartphone market is hard for the company to monetize. For Samsung, this growth may lead the way for the company's own operating system -- Tizen-- still expected to be released on a premium phone later this summer.

The first thing to realize about StoneMor is that arcane and flexible accounting rules make it important to dig beneath its GAAP earnings. Growth throughout the industry has been substantial, as up-and-coming Carriage Services (NYSE: CSV  ) continued to stay on pace for double-digit sales growth as it rapidly expands its reach. Even well-established player Matthews International (NASDAQ: MATW  ) managed to grow revenue by nearly 14% in the quarter that ended in March, although its earnings fell slightly from the year-ago quarter. Still, StoneMor's sales haven't been able to rise as quickly as its peers, with its previous report including just a 6% gain in revenue.

Best Transportation Companies To Buy Right Now

It continued to be a rough week for the markets today, with the broad-based S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) being jerked lower because of continued weakness in Apple, as well as a slight rise in initial jobless claims.

Apple continued its swoon following news yesterday that one of its audio suppliers for the iPhone and iPad, Cirrus Logic, would fall short of Wall Street's revenue forecasts for the upcoming quarter, leading many to believe that Apple's sales are bound to slump, as well.

On the jobs front, initial jobless claims climbed 4,000, or 1.1%, to a seasonally adjusted rate of 352,000. While that's hardly a big rise, or a sign that the labor market is deteriorating, any upward movement in jobless claims in the same week that China reports weaker sequential GDP figures, and commodities tumble, is bound to put goose bumps on traders' backs.

For the day, the S&P 500 finished lower by 10.40 points (-0.67%), to close at 1,541.61. Despite the third big down day in the past four sessions, three stocks -- with a heavy emphasis on energy, chemicals, and transportation -- all bucked the trend following better-than-expected earnings reports.

Kirby Corporation (NYSE: KEX  ) , which operates 30% of the coastal tank barges in the U.S. Oiltanking Partners (NYSE: OILT  ) , which has storage capacity of 12.1 million barrels and six deepwater docks on the Houston Ship Channel Martin Midstream Partners (NASDAQ: MMLP  ) , which operates a large fleet of inland barges and controls 31 marine terminals

These companies won't be the only winners, but they are a good place to start your research.

Unfortunately for XTO Energy, there was one small and, unbeknownst to anyone, unresolved matter. You see, LINN had a contract to sell its gas through a unit of Dominion Resources (NYSE: D  ) , which was gathering the gas in its system. However, LINN's gas wasn't up to the system's standards, so it began to look for another gatherer and it approached Equitrans, which is now part of EQT Midstream Partners (NYSE: EQM  ) but formerly was a unit of EQT Corp. (NYSE: EQT  ) -- they talked, but nothing was signed. However, an EQT employee later that year thought that it had and began crediting gas to the wrong company.

Investors face quite the dilemma when choosing which way to play the explosive growth of oil and gas production. Some choose to invest in the upside of the commodities by investing directly in an oil and gas producer. Others want the security of midstream cash flows and instead choose to invest in the MLP sector. That means that investors seeking a little bit of exposure to both plays need to invest in two separate companies. Unless, of course, they've invested inEagle Rock Energy Partners (NASDAQ: EROC  ) .

4 Huge Stocks to Trade (or Not)

BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) -- Put down the 10-K filings and the stock screeners. It's time to take a break from the traditional methods of generating investment ideas. Instead, let the crowd do it for you.

From hedge funds to individual investors, scores of market participants are turning to social media to figure out which stocks are worth watching. It's a concept that's known as "crowdsourcing," and it uses the masses to identify emerging trends in the market.

Crowdsourcing has long been a popular tool for the advertising industry, but it also makes a lot of sense as an investment tool. After all, the market is completely driven by the supply and demand, so it can be valuable to see what names are trending among the crowd.

While some fund managers are already trying to leverage social media resources like Twitter to find algorithmic trading opportunities, for most investors, crowdsourcing works best as a starting point for investors who want a starting point in their analysis. Today, we'll leverage the power of the crowd to take a look at some of the most active stocks on the market today.

These "most active" names are the most heavily-traded names on the market -- and often, uber-active names have some sort of a technical or fundamental catalyst driving investors' attention on shares. That's especially true now that earnings season is officially underway. And when there's a big catalyst, there's often a trading opportunity.

Without further ado, here's a look at today's stocks.

Ford

Nearest Resistance: $16.50

Nearest Support: $15

Catalyst: Technical Setup

Auto giant Ford (F) is off almost 2% today for technical reasons, as shares continue to have a hangover from earnings at the start of this week. This chart hasn't looked good since the end of 2013, when shares started forming a head and shoulders top. The trigger for that bearish setup came in mid-December, followed by a pullback to retest $16.50 support.

Now shares are make-or-break at $15. If Ford can't catch a bid and bounce higher here, expect another leg down.

Amazon.com

Nearest Resistance: $410

Nearest Support: $360

Catalyst: Earnings

We've heard it all before: Valuation doesn't matter in Amazon.com (AMZN).

Well, until today, that is. AMZN is off nearly 10% on the heels of an earnings miss that had the firm's 51 cents per share in earnings a full 15 cents shy of estimates. Maybe worse, the announcement that a price hike could be coming for its Prime service could provide a big test of just how sticky all of those Amazon customers really are.

I wouldn't recommend buying the dip in Amazon. While shares had been showing an ostensibly bullish setup earlier this month, that trade broke before it ever triggered. Now, with today's big gap down, there's no question that this chart is broken. Stay away until it finds support.

Mattel

Nearest Resistance: $40

Nearest Support: N/A

Catalyst: Earnings

The same can be said of toymaker Mattel (MAT). Mattel announced its quarterly numbers this morning, showing earnings of $1.07 per share on weaker-than-expected holiday sales. Analysts' best guess had been closer to $1.19, so shares are down almost 10% in today's session.

The technicals are pretty simple in Mattel. The uptrend in shares broke when the calendar flipped over to January, and shares have been lowing through support in the weeks since. That's a clear indication that buyers were fleeing shares, and it's why today's gap down was so brutal.

This chart is broken just like Amazon's, only more so. I'd stay away unless buyers can retake resistance at $40.

MasterCard

Nearest Resistance: $77.50

Nearest Support: $70

Catalyst: Earnings

MasterCard (MA) is another earnings disappointment that's trading on high volume this afternoon. And while the size of MasterCard's move down isn't as substantial as other big earnings drops today (it's down just over 4% as I write), the move could be every bit as consequential. MasterCard earned 57 cents per share in the last quarter, besting its previous year's income by 13% -- but that wasn't enough to appease Wall Street, and shares are reacting to that today.

What's notable about MasterCard is the fact that MA has been one of the biggest relative strength names in the last year. This stock's uptrend has been well-defined, but it's in jeopardy in this session. Shares are breaking down below the trendline support level that's been in play for months. If shares can't close above $76, it's time to unload MA before it moves lower.
