Granite Broadcasting Corporation (Granite), incorporated in 1988, is a television broadcasting company focused on developing and operating small- to middle-market television broadcast stations in the United States. The Company owns and operates six middle-market stations, and has shared services agreements and advertising representation agreements to two additional stations owned by Malara Broadcast Group and one additional station owned by Four Seasons Broadcast Company. Granite's revenues are derived principally from local and national advertising and, to a lesser extent, from network compensation for the broadcast of programming, and from studio rental and commercial production activities. On July 26, 2006, the Company completed the acquisition of WBNG, Channel 12, the CBS-affiliated television station serving Binghamton and Elmira, New York. In December 2006, Granite, along with certain of its subsidiaries, voluntarily filed petitions for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

The stations that Granite owns and the stations to which the Company provides services under local services agreements operate in geographically diverse markets. With respect to the stations the Company owns, as of December 31, 2005, two stations are located in the west region (KBWB-San Francisco, California and KSEE-Fresno, California); four stations are located in the mid-west region (WDWB- Detroit, Michigan; WEEK-Peoria, Illinois; WISE-Fort Wayne, Indiana, and KBJR-Duluth, Minnesota), and two stations are located in the northeast region (WKBW-Buffalo and WTVH-Syracuse, New York).

As of December 31, 2005, four of the eight stations the Company owns are affiliated with NBC, one is affiliated with ABC, one is affiliated with CBS and two are affiliated with the WB Network, which has announced that it will no longer provide programming to WB affiliates effective September 2006. All three of the s! tations to which the Company provides services under local services agreements are located in the midwest region (WPTA-Fort Wayne, Indiana; KDLH-Duluth, Minnesota, and WAOE- Peoria, Illinois). WPTA is affiliated with ABC, KDLH is affiliated with CBS and WAOE is affiliated with UPN.

Affiliates of the major networks, which include NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox, receive a significant portion of their programming each day from the network. These major networks provide programming, and in some cases, cash payments, to their affiliated stations in exchange for a significant portion of the affiliates' advertising inventory during the network provided programs. These networks then sell this advertising time and retain the revenue.

Granite has entered into affiliation agreements with networks for each of the stations the Company owns. KSEE, WEEK, WISE (acquired on March 8, 2005) and KBJR are affiliated with NBC, WKBW is affiliated with ABC, WTVH is affiliated with CBS, and KBWB and WDWB stations are affiliated with WB. WPTA, which Granite sold, on March 7, 2005, to Malara Broadcast Group, is affiliated with ABC. With respect to the two stations that are owned by Malara Broadcast Group to which, since March 8, 2005, the Company provides services under local services agreements, KDLH is affiliated with CBS and WPTA is affiliated with ABC. WAOE, which is owned by Four Seasons Broadcast Company, is affiliated with UPN. In addition to these network affiliation agreements, Granite delivers WB programming on leased cable channels in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Duluth, Minnesota-Superior, Wisconsin. In the Duluth, Minnesota-Superior, Wisconsin, the Company delivers UPN programming on one of KBJR's digital streams, which programming is retransmitted in analog format by certain major cable systems in the DMA. In addition, KRII multicasts Weather Plus on another of KBJR's digital streams.

Since March 8, 2005, Granite has shared services agreements and advertising representation agreements (or loc! al servic! e agreements) to provide advertising, sales promotion and administrative services, and selected programming to two additional stations owned by Malara Broadcast Group, all of which Granite and Malara stations are affiliated with either ABC, NBC or CBS, the Company's Big Three Affiliates. On September 8, 2005, Granite entered into a definitive agreement (the KBWB Purchase and Sale Agreement) to sell substantially all of the assets of KBWB-TV, the WB affiliate serving the San Francisco, California television market, to AM Broadcasting KBWB, Inc. (the KBWB Buyer). In addition, on September 8, 2005, the Company entered into a definitive agreement (the WDWB Purchase and Sale Agreement, and together with the KBWB Purchase and Sale Agreement, the Purchase and Sale Agreements) to sell substantially all of the assets of WDWB-TV, the WB affiliate serving the Detroit Michigan television market, to AM Broadcasting WDWB, Inc. (the WDWB Buyer).

On September 1, 2005, Granite entered into an arrangement with Four Seasons Broadcast Company, under which the Company will provide advertising, sales promotion and administrative services to Four Seasons Broadcast Company-owned station WAOE-TV, the UPN affiliate serving Peoria-Bloomington, Illinois, in return for certain fees that will be paid by Four Seasons Broadcast Company to Granite.     Another name that's starting to move within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Whiting USA Trust I (WHX). This stock hasn't done much so far in 2013, with shares up just 4.5%.

    If you look at the chart for Whiting USA Trust I, you'll notice that this stock has been uptrending strong for the last few weeks, with shares moving higher from its low of $3.65 to its intraday high of $4.87 a share. During that move, shares of WHX have been consistently making higher lows and higher highs, which is bullish technical price action. That move has now spiked shares of WHX back above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages, which is bullish. Shares of WHX are now quickly moving within range of triggering a big breakout trade.

    Traders should now look for long-biased trades in WHX if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $4.90 to $5.04 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 321,220 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then WHX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $6.23 to $8.01 a share.

    Traders can look to buy WHX off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $4.12 a share. One can also buy WHX off strength once it takes out that breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Starbucks Earnings Preview: Can It Execute on These 3 Things?

It's hard to fathom, but at more than 20,500 stores and $16 billion in annual sales, Starbucks  (NASDAQ: SBUX  ) still considers itself a growth company. Considering that it has grown net revenues about 12% per year over the past five years -- a rate that doubles sales every six years -- it's probably not a stretch to think that it just might be.

However, a company already this large has to work a lot harder -- and smarter -- to keep up the growth rate. With earnings for the fourth quarter and full year set to release on Thursday, Oct. 30, what can investors expect? Well, with the global economy still in a bit of a funk in many places, it's a little tough to know exactly what to expect. However, the short-term results are less important than progress on the long-term goals. Here are three things we will get an update on in the earnings release and conference call that probably matter the most for the long term.

1. All about Asia

Management made it pretty clear how important Asian expansion is when it acquired the remaining stake in Starbucks Japan about a month ago, bringing the current 1,000-plus stores there under company control, and smoothing the path for forward growth. Furthermore, the company's pace of store expansion in all of Asia is outpacing all other markets. Last quarter, the company announced that it had opened 160 new stores in Asia, 34% more than a year ago, and 11 more than it opened in the Americas. As a comparison, the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region -- called EMEA -- combined for a net 37 new stores opened last quarter. 

Part of the reason in the divergence between Asia and EMEA can be seen the historical results. Starbucks' stores in Europe have historically performed worse than other markets, as reflected in the most recent comps growth of 3%, less than half that of the consolidated business. Furthermore, the CAP region has carried historically strong margins and operating income versus EMEA.

China and India alone have more than 2 billion residents combined and will be the home to hundreds of millions of new members of the middle class over the next decade or so, and the company's only presence in India so far is limited to a single joint venture, while China has over 1,000 stores. Look for further clarity on Starbucks' expansion plans for Asia in 2015: This market should become the company's second-largest next year, on the back of an expected 750 new stores opened in 2014, and 800 in 2015.

Of the 13,000-plus stores in the Americas, almost all of them are in North America, except for 70 company-owned stores in Brazil, and 207 listed as "other" in the 2014 annual report. CFO Scott Maw announced that the company will open 650 stores in the Americas on the Q3 earnings call, but we will probably get updated guidance on that this week. 

How much of that growth will take place in the U.S. versus further into Latin America? Frankly, this is a relatively untapped market outside of Brazil and Mexico. Either way you look at it, it's pretty clear that with comps still in the high single digits, this market is not yet mature. Again, as with the PAC region, I'm looking for more detail on Starbucks' expansion plans in the region. 

Additionally, and just as important, is seeing further stabilization of the business in Europe. Comps of 3% aren't good, frankly, but it's important to consider that much of Europe has yet to fully recover from the recession. In the Q3 earnings call, management did state that comps in the U.K. and Germany -- easily the two strongest economies in Europe -- were better than the rest of EMEA, which bodes well. Furthermore, both margins and operating income were drastically better last quarter than the year-ago period. Ideally, this trend will continue this quarter. 

3. All the other stuff

Remember when you used to go to Starbucks to drink coffee?

Starbucks has introduced a lot of new products to its stores over the past several years, ranging from new food options to non-coffee beverage choices. For the most part, management has done a pretty solid job of integrating these things into the Starbucks experience, enhancing it without changing it. It is important that the company continues to execute on that strategy going forward. 

I think a big part of the growth in China and India, and even here in the Americas, will be how well it is able to expand its alternatives, especially teas. Currently, there are more than 300 Teavana stores, but it's important to remember that Teavana sells teas but isn't a place to go to drink tea, like Starbucks is a place to drink coffee and socialize, relax, or work. As Starbucks expands its business overseas into traditional tea cultures, it will be interesting to see how much emphasis is put on offering teas and other beverages besides its famous coffee drinks. 

The bigger-picture question: Can management successfully integrate so much stuff in international markets as it has in North America? That will matter as time passes, because it will need to keep pulling these levers for future growth. 

Focus on the big picture
While it's clearly important that Starbucks continues to be an excellent operator, the bigger-picture concern, to me, is seeing the company continue to execute on its growth initiatives. Those initiatives are about more than just building more stores -- they also include how well the company can leverage all of its product offerings to drive profitable growth in the coming years. 

Starbucks is already huge, but there's room to keep growing, if management can keep making the right calls.

FY14 earnings are expected to be 92 cents, down from 96 in FY13 — but they’re also supposed to rise to $1.06 in FY15. The problem with Diamond is its debt structure. As of December 31, 2011, these wholesale operations conducted business from more than 290 facilities. its aftermarket product operations may include a combination of sales, warehousing and distribution, and in many cases will be co-located with its refurbishing operations. Vehicle processing for its wholesale recycled operations involves dismantling a salvage vehicle into recycled products that are ready for sale.

As of December 31, 2011, it operated 34 plastic bumper and bumper cover refurbishing plants, a chrome bumper plating plant, 15 wheel plants, one light refurbishing plant and four engine remanufacturing facilities. Most of its refurbished and remanufactured products are sold through its wholesale distribution channels. The balance is sold to retail automotive stores, wholesale distributors and through Internet sales. Its wholesale recycled product operations generate scrap metal and other materials that it sells to recyclers. T! he Compan! y has a distribution network of over 290 wholesale plants and warehouses across the United States and Canada, of which 50 function as hub or cross dock facilities.

WHOLESALE AUTO PRODUCTS-EUROPE

The Company�� European wholesale operating segment was formed in 2011 with its acquisition of ECP, the distributor of automotive aftermarket products. The Company operates 90 branches, supported by eight regional hubs and a national distribution center, which allows us to reach major markets within the United Kingdom. In 2011, it sold more than 121,000 SKUs of aftermarket products, primarily composed of mechanical aftermarket parts for the repair of vehicles five to 15 years old. Its products include electrical products, such as spark plugs and ignition coils, clutches and related parts, steering and suspension parts, and brake pads and sensors. SELF SERVICE RETAIL PRODUCTS

The Company�� self service retail operations sell parts from older cars and light trucks directly to consumers. In addition to revenue from the sale of parts, core and scrap, it charges admission fee to access the property. Its self service facilities typically consist of a fenced or enclosed area of several acres with vehicles stored outdoors and a retail building through which customers are able to access the yard. As of December 31, 2011, it conducted our self service retail operations from 47 facilities in North America. Its self service auto recycling operations generate scrap metal, alloys and other materials that it sells to recyclers.

HEAVY-DUTY TRUCK PRODUCTS

As of December 31, 2011, it had a total of 18 facilities in the United States and Canada. Its inventory is comprised of used heavy- and medium-duty trucks, usually five years or older, which are purchased at salvage and truck auctions or direct! ly from i! nsurance companies or fleet operators. During 2011, it purchased approximately 6,000 vehicles. Depending on the condition of the vehicles, they may be dismantled for parts or resold as running vehicles. If certain mechanical parts are damaged, such as transmissions, it may remanufacture them and offer them to its customers. The vehicles that are acquired for resale are typically special purpose or vocational use trucks, such as those used for garbage pickup or cement delivery. If requested by the sellers of the vehicles, it provide an assurance that the vehicles will be sold to foreign buyers and exported to countries for use outside of the United States, or to domestic buyers after the vehicles have been reconditioned and modified for use other than their original purpose.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Bad news may be good news again.

The Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq all rose Friday despite a tepid government jobs report showed that only 113,000 jobs were created in January. The unemployment rate ticked down to 6.6%.-- its lowest level in five years. Economists surveyed by CNNMoney expected the U.S. economy to have added 178,000 jobs.

While some economists warned that a weak jobs report could be expected due to unusually cold weather in January, Friday's number follows a weak December report in which the economy added a paltry 75,000 jobs.

"Colder than normal weather was a factor but that simply does not explain two consecutive months of poor performance," said Peter Morici, an economics professor at the University of Maryland. "These sad results are consistent with a broadly underperforming economy."

That trade will hit if TGE manages to take out some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.95 to $4 with high volume.

    Traders should now look for long-biased trades in TGE as long as it's trending above those double bottom support levels and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 114,667 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then TGE will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.25 to its 50-day moving average of $4.52, or even $4.75 to $5.
